What is stress?

The NHS Health Scotland characterizes stress as “the feeling of being under too much mental or emotional pressure,” noting that it occurs when individuals feel unable to cope. While definitions vary, stress levels are rising across society, with technology sector workers experiencing particularly elevated rates.

Stress in tech

Research by BIMA reveals that tech professionals experience higher stress levels than the UK average—comparable to those of NHS workers. The Tech Inclusion and Diversity report found that over 25% of tech workers have been diagnosed with mental health conditions primarily caused by workplace stress and discrimination.

What impact does stress have on us?

Stress reduces job performance, creating a vicious cycle of escalating tension. Elevated stress leads to decreased focus, emotion-based decision-making, and impaired cognitive function. According to a PMI conference paper on stress management, “when the statistically average person is under significant stress their cognitive performance measured by IQ temporarily drops by 15 points.”

So why are we particularly stressed in tech?

The technology industry’s tight deadlines, high output expectations, long hours, and always-on culture contribute significantly to worker stress. Imposter syndrome compounds these pressures, creating an environment where excessive stress becomes normalized.

Reducing stress: action-orientated approaches

Taking concrete steps to modify stressful circumstances proves effective. Mutual encourages email checks limited to twice daily, using unavailable statuses during focused work, and providing time management tools. The company also minimizes unnecessary meetings.

Reducing stress: emotion-orientated approaches

Reframing negative situations as learning opportunities or process improvements transforms perspective. During project debriefs, the team identifies successes alongside challenges, converting setbacks into constructive outcomes.

Reducing stress: acceptance-orientated approaches

Recognizing what lies beyond your control allows energy redirection toward manageable factors. This distinction proves particularly challenging in tech, an industry driven by problem-solving and achievement.

What else can we do

Mutual implements pair programming to distribute cognitive load and reduce individual stress. The company allocates time for continuous learning, enabling skill development outside immediate project demands. Flexible working arrangements and remote work options further support employee wellbeing.
