Launching Huck Magazine

We’ve launched a new platform for Huck Magazine, the bi-monthly publication that’s been celebrating independent culture and counterculture movements since 2006. Named after Mark Twain’s rebellious protagonist, Huck explores emerging subcultures worldwide, from all-female roller derby in Beirut to heavy metal scenes in Botswana.

Published by TCOLondon, Huck evolved from its surf and skate roots to cover the wider world of culture through a lens of activism and independence. The challenge was building a platform that could handle diverse content formats, from long-form reportage to video content, while maintaining Huck’s distinctive approach to visual storytelling.

We created a multi-format platform using Craft CMS that seamlessly integrates written features, video content, and the magazine’s bold imagery. The content architecture uses subcultures as entry points for deeper articles about music, politics, and places around the world.

The platform needed to honour Huck’s commitment to spotlighting artists, activists, and creative pioneers who challenge mainstream culture and build communities for social change. The system gives editors flexibility to tell stories in whatever format serves them best, whether that’s a photo essay, a video documentary, or a 3,000-word feature.

The result is a digital home for stories about people challenging the status quo, maintaining Huck’s reputation for in-depth reportage on unlikely subcultures worldwide.
